ACM’s are split into two types, bonded (tightly bound) and friable (loosely
bound). Bonded ACM’s are common in the domestic home. Bonded materials usually
contain up to 15 – 20% asbestos, they are generally quite solid and the asbestos
fibres are tightly bound in the material. Bad removal practices involving bonded
materials can result in bonded materials becoming friable. Other environmental
factors can also contribute to the deterioration of bonded asbestos materials,
including weathering.
In Queensland bonded asbestos can be removed by experienced individuals who
posses a ‘B’ Class Certificate for Asbestos Removal. Friable asbestos was more
commonly used in commercial and industrial settings. They can be as much as 100%
asbestos and can be pulverised by hand pressure. Friable asbestos is very
dangerous as the asbestos fibres are more easily airborne. Friable ACM’s must
only be handled and removed by an asbestos removalist with an ‘A’ Class
Certificate. Asbestos Solutions Australia holds current ‘A’ and ‘B’ Class
Certificates. All of the team at Asbestos Solutions Australia carry out removal
works in a safe and professional manner.
